Newly named aftercare provides a safe space for children

The aftercare was previously closed during lockdown at the Scout Hall in Northcliff and It has been at the Recreation Centre in Windsor East since 2022.

Spring not only brought a ray of sunshine, but also lots of smiles and enjoyment for nearly 30 children at Windsor East’s newly renamed aftercare party.

The aftercare is a programme of the Tshepo Community Development Initiative and has been running at the Recreational Centre under the leadership of Lethabo Sebopa.

Parents and members of the Tshepo board were asked for suggestions and voted for the best name – ‘Lesedi Aftercare’.

Karabo Matlapeng, Mlando Mbuli and Mercy Muzenda were three lucky-draw prize winners at the Lesedi Aftercare party.

Alet Geldenhuys, Tshepo Community Development Initiative general manager said that the Lesedi Aftercare is and will be a safe haven for children whose parents work and cannot assist with homework and other things.

“It benefits the community by keeping the children safe and assisting with homework and reading skills as well as keeping the children busy constructively.”

Lesedi Aftercare is part of a wider community organisation and non-profit organisation supported by local churches and the community.

“We aim to make a difference in the local community and to create an environment that encourages healthy relationships, promotes education, and nurtures a love for reading.
“Our reading and literacy center is integrated with our after-school programme and develops reading skills among kids using a computer-based reading program. We also boast a library of children’s books, which we use to develop a love for reading among the kids attending our programme.”
